A Midsummer's Night in Budapest

tancosok.jpg

Once again, we are in the middle of the year, just around the corner from the Summer Solstice and Budapest is about to roll out the festival carpet.

The longest night of the year had taken on 'magical proportions' among cultures and in the centuries past it had become a night of fire festivals and love, magic and divination. This is a night for lovers and predictions when pairs of lovers would jump through lucky flames or maidens could find out who their future husbands would be, all the while banishing demons and spirits. Folks had attributed healing powers to flowers, herbs and water, among other things and so a dip on Midsummer Night is believed to have special powers - as does consuming baked elder flower blossoms.

Shakespeare documented these traditions (and preserved them) and their hidden meanings for us in in his play by the same title Midsummer Night's Dream.

The magic might come from the stark contrast to the winter left behind, the warm nights and nature reborn. No wonder people take to celebrations: darkness has lost its power and light is triumphant.

As it had become tradition, museums will be open free of charge during the night on June 23rd. Museum buses will be running all night, tickets for the bus and the even are available in the museums and the main BKV kiosks.

Among some of the 50 participating museums and programs on the night of the 23rd are:

--Balsamic, erotic night (Aquincum Museum)
--Actors without costumes (Bajor Gizi Actor Museum)
--Ice cream night (Museum of Trade and Tourism)
--From bicycle-frame to concrete cathedral (Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art)
--Dinosaurs and dance steps from Argentina (Hungarian Natural History Museum)
--Voice-textile-ethnic night (Museum of Ethnography)
--Seance in Csinszka's salon (Ady Museum)
--Night of the sun worshippers (Museum of Fine Arts)
--Retro-exhibition (Transport Museum)
--Mongol fires storm the gates (Hungarian National Museum)
--Yoga in the Garden (The Ferenc Hopp Museum)

The following list of on-line cookie recipes was making the circuits a few years back in Christmas mailers. I was fascinated by it then and still am so I thought I would share it with those of you who love cookies.

Chill the milk and let's begin.
