Opusztaszer is located in the flatland (Alfold) of Hungary and is most famous for the Feszty Panoramic painting depicting the arrival of the Hungarian settlers.
The painting was in fact intended for the 1000th anniversary of the 895 arrival of the Hungarians in the Carpathian basin.
The painting took two years to complete and assistance from several other painters who helped Arpad Feszty
The painting is close to being 50 feet tall and almost 400 feet in length encircling the exhibit hall. Since 1995 it had been on display at the National Historical Memorial Park in Ópusztaszer, Hungary.
The park is an easy ride on highway from Budapest and once there from highway to the park one rides along farm land and peaceful greenery.
Because the park was created so the entire family can enjoy - in addition to various period displays of country living in Hungary (Skanzen) along with livestock (sheep, longhorns and horses). There is also demonstration of net fishing as it was (and likely still is) done on the Tisza, a statue park all on a beautifully maintained, spacious green park.
There are craftsman demonstrating along the way and a functioning bakery and even hairdresser in period country homes.
Should you prefer comfort (as we did) rather than walk the entire compound - we opted to ride in modified golf carts to be sure to see all of the grounds. There were pick-nick tables and fire pits dotting the shaded areas throughout so if you are so inclined you may bring your own food and prepare it fresh.
The entry fee to the park is 2,500 HUF per person which is well worth the price for the exhibited painting alone.
If you are not going to spend the day or bring your own food - while there is food being sold on the grounds - you may wish to visit the Szeri Csarda just a stone's throw away from the entrance to the park. We stopped there for coffee on our way in and could smell the teasing aroma of grilled meat so there was no question where we would have our meal on the way back.

It is a perfect day trip from the city for the whole family where you can enjoy art, history, good food and the great outdoors.
